Jack-o'-Lantern

#4 - Hello, hello Jack-o’-Lantern!

So, Lily bought four pumpkins. The plan is to turn them into spooky Jack-o’-Lanterns. It sounded like such a fun idea! But now, standing there with a pumpkin, knife, and spoon, Lily hesitates. Phew, what is she getting herself into…

Okay! She exhales deeply and picks up the sharp knife. “Cut a circle off the top—but not straight!” her sister Lisa had said, “Remember… at an angle!” She means to cut inward, so the ‘lid’ doesn’t fall through the hole. Slowly, Lily carves. “Whoohoo!” she shouts. The dog, Charlie, remains unimpressed, lying there lazily.

But then. “Scoop out all the seeds and stringy stuff,” was Lisa’s next step. Makes sense! Lily grabs the big spoon. But… what a mess! She forgets to save the seeds for roasted pumpkin seeds. Oops! They’re already in the trash.

Now comes the hard part… The face. Does she want a scary, creepy, or cute face? Mmmm… Scary! She draws the face with a marker: triangle eyes, a nose, and a zig-zag lightning-shaped mouth. Her hands are still slightly shaky from all the scooping.

And now to carve the face. Cut by cut, it goes smoothly but oh so slowly. You don’t want a crooked mouth or oversized eyes, right?

Now! A candle inside, lid on top, and done! You know what, Lily thinks, the other three pumpkins can be for the kids. Tonight is going to be spooky fun!

Charlie, however, is not impressed.
