#14 - Never too late for a DIY Countdown Calendar

Every year, it seems like countdown calendars are everywhere, practically thrown at you from every direction. But this year, Lily has a different thought: “Why not make my own?” Not just any countdown calendar with the usual chocolates, though—Lily wants something more original, something personal.

Armed with printed papers, scissors, and double-sided tape, she gets to work creating tiny paper houses, one for each day. Each house is filled with surprises: chocolates or sweets for some, silly challenges for others, and the occasional bad joke (classic Lily).

The family gathers around the calendar. Her youngest, Jack, is the first to open a house. Inside, he finds a slip of paper: “Do your best chicken dance in front of the family.” Jack, never one to shy away from embarrassment, flaps his arms and squawks across the living room, sending Ella into hysterics.

The next day, it is her husband Ben’s turn. His slip read: “Compliment everyone at the table… while wearing a Santa hat.” By day three, even grumpy teenager Jules can’t resist the charm of the calendar, cracking a smile at his own dare: “Sing ‘Jingle Bells’ like a rock star.”

By the end of the week, the countdown calendar has become the highlight of their evenings. Lily beams—her homemade creation isn’t just fun, it brings them all closer together. As she sips her coffee that night, she thinks, “I wonder if anyone has noticed that there’s no silly challenge for me.” Ssshhh…
